8th July, 2009: Kroto Institute, University of Sheffield, UK

'Innovative Medical Devices and Nanotechnology '

NanoMedNet, Cranfield University and the Institute of Nanotechnology

A one-day interactive workshop for clinicians, researchers and industry aimed at examining how nanotechnology can be applied to bring new functionality across the hugely diverse field of medical devices.

This workshop provides a showcase of innovative medical technologies from locally based companies together with a description of how the application of nanotechnology and other enabling technologies is leading to the development of novel medical devices.

Course Coordinators -

Dr Beppe Battaglia, Kroto Research Institute
Giuseppe Battaglia was appointed as Lecturer in Bionanotechnology in February 2006 and as the Biocompatibles Lecturer in Bionanotechnology in February 2008 at the kroto Institute, University of Sheffield. Prior to joining the department, he completed his PhD in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Sheffield within Professor Anthony Ryan´s research group. Before moving to Sheffield, he graduated in Chemical Engineering at the University of Palermo, Italy, specialising in Macromolecular Biomaterials and joined the ICI Strategic Technology Group as Research Process Engineer. His research interests focus upon self-assembling polymers in water for the design of functional materials.

Richard Moore, Institute of Nanotechnology
Richard Moore is responsible for nanomedicine and lifesciences at the Institute of Nanotechnology (IoN) including the NanoMedNet nanomedicine network and professional training courses and workshops. He participates on behalf of IoN in EU research projects under FP6 and FP7, in national projects concerning nanomedicine, and in national and international standardization activities. Prior to joining the IoN early in 2007, he worked for ten years as Director, Science and Innovation at Eucomed (European Medical Technology Association) and for six years as Project Manager, Healthcare at the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), both based in Brussels.

    Nanobiosensors

This course provides an introduction to the rapidly emerging field of Nanobiosensors. Nanotechnology is exerting increasing influence on how we understand, design and build new analytical devices to unravel the conundrums of systems biology and deliver novel bioelectronic devices. Whether it is the challenge of integrating millions of assays on a single chip or developing a tiny biocompatible artificial cell for implantation, the art of engineering to nanometre tolerances or building supramolecular machinery offers us new phenomena to tackle key medical and environmental issues. This course will introduce the concepts, materials, engineering principles and market opportunities opened up by this new integrating discipline.

    • The one-day course will consist of 6 lectures and discussion sessions introducing different aspects of nanobiosensors, from the basic fundamentals to the various applications.
    • Refreshments and lunch will be provided.

The attendee is expected to receive a comprehensive package of the emerging field of nanobiosensors including the background, latest developments and achievements as well as the market opportunities.

    Course Leader -

    Dr Iva Chianella
Dr Chianella is currently Lecturer in Analytical Chemistry within the Smart Materials group in Cranfield Health. Dr Chianella was awarded her first degree in Chemistry in 1998 from the University of Florence, Italy. She gained her Ph.D. in 2003 from Cranfield University working on the development of sensors based on artificial receptors. In 2002 she joined the Smart Materials group as a Research Officer and was promoted to Lecturer in July 2007. Her current interests are development of novel nanomaterials such as artificial receptors and their applications in sensor technology. Dr Chianella has more than 20 publications and 4 patents in the area of artificial receptors and related aspects of their use in analytical systems.

Converging Technologies for 21st Century Security

Converging Technologies for 21st Century Security

Organised crime, terrorism, civil conflict, and natural disasters are sadly commonplace in global society and have developed increasingly complex dimensions. To counter such threats, civil security and emergency response teams are looking towards new technologies that offer more sensitive, rapid, and accurate detection methods; that provide the means to neutralise or effectively deal with the outcomes of such incidents; and that provide greater protection to personnel.

The Institute of Nanotechnology (IoN), through its role in the EU-funded observatoryNANO project, is investigating the role that nanotechnology and other technologies can play in addressing such complex security issues. The conference on ‘Converging Technologies for 21st Century Security' brings experts from across the world to present their latest R&D in:

    • detection of hazardous materials,
    • responding to crisis events,
    • protection measures for personnel and infrastructure,
    • identification of personnel and goods.

This IoN conference is targeted towards governmental agencies, industrial groups, and technology start-ups with a keen interest in addressing security challenges.
