The Institute of Nanotechnology is accredited with the Investors in People Standard. |
Our Vision -
"To be the foremost global nanotechnology information provider and membership organisation."
Our Mission -
"To foster, develop and promote all aspects of responsible nanoscience and nanotechnology that have the potential to benefit society and the environment"
Background
The Institute of Nanotechnology (IoN) was established in January 1997. It is a registered Charity, whose core activities are focused on education and training in nanotechnology, in the widest sense. It grew out of the Centre for Nanotechnology, part funded by the DTI through the UK 's National Initiative on Nanotechnology (NION). The Institute was one of the world's first nanotechnology information providers and is now a global leader.
IoN works closely with governments, universities, researchers, companies and the general public to educate and inform on all aspects of nanotechnology. It is also an organizer of international scientific events, conferences and educational courses that examine the implications of nanotechnology for industry, society, health, energy and the environment, and the disadvantaged communities across the globe.
Early Activities
Between 2001 and 2003, as part of the formulation of a nanotechnology strategy for the UK , the then DTI approached IoN to organise fact finding Missions to key nanotechnology locations. UK industrialists, scientists and Government representatives were taken to visit facilities and companies in Germany and across the USA . Further Missions were organised to some of the major NanoCentres of Europe, including Grenoble , Karlsruhe , Louvain , Copenhagen and Cork . At that time IoN also mapped the UK nanotechnology 'landscape' for the DTI, in partnership with the National Physical Laboratory.
Working with the EU

From 2002 – 2007, IoN was the lead partner in Nanoforum, www.nanoforum.org ‘the European Nanotechnology Gateway', an important dissemination project aimed at raising the levels of nanotechnology knowledge across EU Member States. The project produced a very popular and informative website, many original analyses and reports, and a series of nano events and workshops that took place across Europe . Funding finished last year, but the project has been so successful that it is continuing as a European Economic Interest Group, supporting the dissemination of results from other EU projects.
